TU Wien – Technology for People

TU Wien is the hosting institution of CIRP CMS 2027 and one of Europe’s leading universities in technology and engineering.

With a strong focus on innovation and interdisciplinary research, TU Wien contributes expertise in areas closely related to the conference themes, including manufacturing, production.

Guided by its mission “Technology for People”, the university emphasizes the development of solutions that address challenges from the industry as well as society.

Located in Vienna, TU Wien is part of a vibrant research and innovation ecosystem, connecting academia, industry, and policy.

For participants, this provides a unique opportunity to engage with cutting-edge research and build connections within one of Europe’s most dynamic technology hubs.

About TU Wien

TU Wien is Austria’s largest research and educational institution in the field of technology and natural sciences. Here, over 4,000 academics are working on ‘Technology for People’ in five key areas of research across eight faculties.

The content of the courses offered is based on the excellent research, benefiting around 26,000 students in 62 courses of study. As a driver of innovation, TU Wien strengthens Vienna’s status as an economic hub, enables collaboration and contributes to the prosperity of society as a whole.

Research – Developing Excellence in Scientific Research

As a premier research university we build our reputation through our scientific and artistic research. TU Wien conducts research and pursues the advancement of the arts (both in the specialist and trans- and interdisciplinary subjects offered). It is committed to maintain the high standards it has achieved and to further enhance them by networking, collaborating and pooling its strengths in national and international collaborations.

Profile

The research portfolio of TU Wien currently features five main areas of research:

  • Computational Science and Engineering
  • Quantum Physics and Quantum Technologies
  • Materials and Matter
  • Information and Communication Technology
  • Energy and Environment

These five areas and their research fields are where the university’s specific strengths and expertise lie. They form the TU Wien research matrix with their cross-faculty activities and raise our profile among the global competition. Our researchers collaborateacross scientific disciplines to conduct research in these and related areas, continually widening their research scope.

  • Chair of Production and Maintenance Management

The Chair of Production and Maintenance Management (PIM) is part of the Faculty of Mechanical and Industrial Engineering at TU Wien and is led by Univ.-Prof. Dr.-Ing. habil. Fazel Ansari. PIM conducts research on data-driven production, maintenance, and asset management across the industrial value chain. Its work combines cyber-physical production systems (CPPS), digital twins, semantic technologies, natural language processing, and advanced Industrial AI to develop intelligent approaches for predictive, prescriptive, and knowledge-based production and maintenance management. A particular focus is placed on Industrial Foundation Models as well as generative and agentic AI for context-aware reasoning, decision support, and human-AI collaboration in industrial environments. The overarching vision is to enable automated, sustainable, resilient, efficient, and effective production and asset management systems and to transfer these approaches into industrial practice and learning-factory environments.

  • Chair of Industrial Engineering

The Industrial Engineering research team, led by Univ.-Prof. Dr.-Ing. Sebastian Schlund, conducts research and teaches in the field of the industrialization of innovative work processes. Our work implements future requirements of competitive and sustainable production in Europe into the innovative application of technology. Our work is guided by the goal of designing productive, ergonomic, and learning-friendly work systems in highly complex environments with dynamic boundary conditions. Our current research focuses on the implementation of material-flow-specific circular economy processes, intuitive human-machine interaction with digitalization and automation solutions, and IT-based facility management. We use established methods and models from the fields of mechanical engineering, industrial engineering, robotics, and computer science – particularly human-computer interaction – to design, implement, and evaluate technical systems, and we are constantly refining them.
