Courtly Festivities in the Orangery

During the Baroque period, the Orangery was not only used as a repository for rare and exotic plants but also formed an important part of courtly festivities. Built after the mid-18th century, the Orangery served as the venue for numerous receptions, celebrations and theatrical performances under Joseph II. It was here that the famous musical contest between Wolfgang A. Mozart and Antonio Salieri took place, and it was here that the Vienna Congress danced. The plants in the Orangery, as well as the Orangery Garden, designed as both an ornamental and a kitchen garden, were key elements in the staging of these events.

Today, the Orangery remains a unique setting for various events. The historic ballroom opens directly onto the Orangery Garden, creating a natural connection between the indoor and outdoor spaces.
